Where're we going...?
Updated: May 13, 2021
It's been great getting together again as a club to enjoy taking photos in different locations. We've got four more great locations to visit this month. In the gallery below you'll find club member's images from past meet-ups in these or similar locations.
At the end of the month is the hand in for the second of our Summer Challenges. The subject for the June challenge is Roadside. You can submit upto 5 images. Please email them to Sue by 30th June (email@example.com) and she will pass them onto Mandy to select her favourites.
Watermouth Cove: 6:30pm
Watermouth is a hamlet positioned along the coast, half way between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe. Here you'll find a sheltered harbour, with beautiful views, overlooked by Watermouth Castle. When the tide is right you can see dolphins, porpoises, and seals. This article offers some tips for what to look out for at a harbour and how to capture great shots: https://www.adorama.com/alc/on-the-waterfront-7-tips-for-successful-harbor-and-marina-photos/
If you have a polariser bring it along as it's great for managing reflections in water and getting more colour and definition in the sky.
There is parking at the harbour for £2 for up to 2 hours. If you have other tips for parking please share in the WhatsApp group. The postcode for the harbour is EX34 9SJ.
Velator / Braunton Marsh: 6:30pm
The marshes are teeming with wildlife, especially birds; including seabirds, estuary birds, ground nesting birds, and birds of prey such as owls. Several families of swans can be spotted living along the waterway through the marshes. For images showing what you might spot in the marshes check out the Friends of Braunton Marsh Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/400589393729546/
Parking is available at Velator Quay (EX33 2DX)
Barnstaple Long Bridge: 6:30pm
The Barnstaple Long Bridge is one of the largest medieval bridges in Britain. On the north side of the bridge is Barnstaple Square with many attractive historical buildings and memorials, including the Barnstaple Clock Tower. It could be a good opportunity for some documentary style photography. On the Barnstaple History website there are lots of 'then and now' images showing areas around the Long Bridge, Barnstaple Square, and The Strand: https://www.barnstaplehistory.com/barnstaple-then-now/
The nearest car park to the bridge is Belle Meadow (EX32 8QB).
Lee Bay: 6:30pm
Lee is a small village with a rugged coastline. It's a great spot for coastal and woodland photography. You can find details of wildlife to be spotted, interesting features to be found, and where to park in this AONB article: https://www.northdevon-aonb.org.uk/sites/default/files/resources/North-Devon-AONB-ilfracombe-beach-profile-Leap-web.pdf
